According to Plymouth City Council ‘Plymouth has 16 secondary schools (including three selective grammar schools) and eight special schools.’ Not forgetting Plymouth College, Plymouth University and Marjons! We’ll pick you up or drop you off from any of these places as part of your lesson, just let us know and we’ll see what we can do!

Don’t worry though, we won’t put your straight on the larger and busier roads, we’ll start your lessons on nice quiet roads where you can get used to driving in a calm and relaxed area before we move on.

It’s a commonly asked question to driving instructors all over the world – Can I drive in Flip Flops? The simple answer is – not if you want to remain safe! It is also advised that you do not drive in high heels or drive bare foot either.

When learning to drive it is important that you have the correct footwear on, this must be flat and cover the whole foot but should be comfortable. Most people suggest a flat pump or flat soled trainer.

Driving in flip flops can be very dangerous, as you will find it difficult to keep them on your feet whilst driving as there is no support around the heel of your foot. If you do lose your flip flops, they may become lodged under your pedals and cause an accident.

A 2005 survey conducted by Norwich Union Motor Insurance in the UK found that flip-flops are the most dangerous item of driving footwear. Of the 1000 motorists questioned, three-quarters said that they found it challenging to drive in flip-flops, yet a quarter admitted to regularly driving in them.

What Shoes Should I Wear To Drive In?

Try wearing thin soled shoes or thin soled trainers so that you can feel the pedals when you drive. Your footwear must fully contain the foot, with movement in the ankle for driving with ease.

The Driving Standards Agency issues the following advice: “Wear sensible clothing for driving, especially on a long journey. Suitable shoes are particularly important. We also would not recommend driving barefoot because you don’t have the same braking force with bare foot as you do with shoes.”

The harder you work both during your lessons and at home, the easier driving will become for you. By revising and studying the highway code and anything your instructor may give you, you will gain a better knowledge and understanding of the roads, and driving.

If you listen to your instructor, and you concentrate on every lesson then you will not only find the lessons and driving become easier, but you will also find yourself having much more fun! Be patient, things will eventually fall into place, if you trust yourself and your instructor.
