F.A.Q.

Learning to drive or thinking about starting on the path to driving can be a scary time, full of questions and things you may not fully understand. We put together some answers to the most commonly asked questions to help you out. If you have any other questions please get in touch with us by phone or email. You can find our contact details here.

How many lessons do I need?

The amount of lessons you need depend on you. If you listen carefully to your instructor and follow the advice they give you it can be a fairly quick process. Different people progress at different speeds. Your instructor may be able to give you some idea of how quickly you are progressing after a number of lessons.

What sorts of things do you do on a lesson?

The lessons consist of many things from maneuvers to theory practice to general driving. Your instructor will have a set plan of what to do on the lesson to ensure you learn everything you need to learn to not only pass your driving test and your theory test, but also to remain a safe and confident driver for years to come.

Do I have to do any studying at home?

It’s entirely up to you. If you want to do some studying at home to increase your knowledge of driving, cars and the highway code, let your instructor know and they will give you either some practice papers or some reading material to help you.

What are the steps I need to take before I book my lessons?

You need to ensure you have both parts of your provisional driving license (paper part and card part). You can apply for this online here. If you have already had lessons from another driving school/instructor it is important to tell your new school about what you have done and how far you have progressed, for example which maneuvers you are able to complete or if you have passed your theory test (you may be asked to bring along certificate). You should also make your new school aware of any medical conditions you have that they should be aware of or if you need to wear glasses you should take them along too.

How many exams/tests are there to take?

There are two main tests you will take to earn certification from the DSA (Driving Standards Agency). These are;

  • The Theory and Hazard Perception Test
  • The Practical Driving Test

However your instructor may suggest some mock tests before the real thing to help you practice for the tests and to show you what they will be like on the day. You can ask your instructor for more tests if you wish.

What should I wear for my lessons?

Make sure you wear comfortable clothes that will not restrict your driving. It is advised that you do not wear high heels or flip flops to drive in. Your shoes should be flat and cover the whole foot but should be comfortable. Most people suggest trainers or a flat pump.
